Grindelwald, Switzerland – At the Foot of Majestic Peaks

by Visual Travel Story

Nestled deep in the Bernese Alps, at 1034 m altitude, Grindelwald is a picturesque Swiss village surrounded by some of the most spectacular peaks in Europe. Tourism here began developing as early as the late 18th century, thanks to its dramatic alpine scenery. Today, it stands as one of Switzerland’s most famous mountain resorts — a paradise for both summer hikers and winter skiers.

During the warmer months, the area turns into a hiking haven, with trails that wind through meadows and forests toward glaciers and lakes. When winter arrives, Grindelwald transforms into a snow-covered playground, attracting ski enthusiasts from all over the world.

The Journey from Lauterbrunnen

After exploring Lauterbrunnen, I decided to visit Grindelwald — another gem of the Jungfrau region. I took the train heading toward Interlaken Ost and changed at Zweilütschinen for the connecting line to Grindelwald.

One thing to keep in mind: the train often splits into two sections — one going toward Lauterbrunnen and the other toward Grindelwald — so it’s important to board the correct half, usually from platforms C–D. The total journey took around 37 minutes, offering scenic views of the valley and the surrounding mountains.

A Walk Through the Village

Upon arrival, I wandered through Grindelwald’s charming streets, surrounded by wooden chalets, alpine flowers, and breathtaking views of the towering peaks that rise close to 4,000 meters high.

Some of the most prominent mountains visible from the village include Wetterhorn, Eiger, Schreckhorn, Faulhorn, and Schwarzhorn. On a clear day, their jagged silhouettes create a stunning natural panorama that defines the essence of the Swiss Alps.

The village itself feels peaceful yet lively, with cozy cafés, souvenir shops, and hikers preparing for their next adventure. It’s the kind of place where every corner seems like a postcard.

Nearby Attractions

Although I didn’t have enough time to explore all of them, several remarkable spots caught my attention and are definitely worth visiting:

  • First Cliff Walk & Bachalpsee: Take the cable car up to First, where you can walk on the spectacular Cliff Walk by Tissot and continue hiking toward the beautiful Bachalpsee Lake, known for its crystal-clear water reflecting the mountains.
  • Wengen: A peaceful, car-free alpine village accessible by train, offering charming views over the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
  • Kleine Scheidegg: A mountain pass located between Eiger and Lauberhorn, from where you can board the famous Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe at 3,454 meters.

A Timeless Mountain Escape

Grindelwald perfectly captures the spirit of the Swiss Alps — dramatic landscapes, crisp mountain air, and endless opportunities for exploration. Whether you visit in summer for the hikes or in winter for the ski slopes, this village offers unforgettable alpine experiences at every turn.
