Every five years, Amsterdam hosts one of the world’s most spectacular maritime events: Sail Amsterdam. The city’s waterfront along the IJ River transforms into a stage for historic tall ships, naval vessels, and modern sailing boats, attracting visitors from across the globe. The 2025 edition once again brought together tradition, culture, and a festive atmosphere, turning the Dutch capital into a true sailing paradise.
A Festival of Tall Ships
The highlight of Sail Amsterdam is the impressive fleet of tall ships, some of which travel thousands of nautical miles to participate. Their towering masts and sails create a dramatic skyline, offering a glimpse into the golden age of sailing. Some vessels are over 100 meters long and nearly 50 meters high, making them truly spectacular to see up close. The ships were moored at IJhaven, along Veemkade, and beside Java Island, making the waterfront an open-air maritime museum. Vessels came from many countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Oman, Peru, Norway, Poland, Uruguay and others. Visitors could board some of the ships, though the queues were very long.

The Atmosphere on the Waterfront
For four days, the IJ waterfront was alive with energy. Besides the majestic tall ships, the river itself was full of small and medium boats, adding to the lively yet crowded atmosphere. Thousands of people gathered along the quays to admire the ships and enjoy the festivities. Street performers, food stalls, and concerts at NDSM added to the program, with some performances requiring tickets.
Events and Activities
Sail Amsterdam is more than just ships on display. The program included sailing parades, cultural performances, demonstrations, and evening light shows on the water. A spectacular laser show from the A’DAM Lookout, opposite Central Station, illuminated the night sky and became one of the highlights of the evening program. On Saturday, I explored the moored ships and enjoyed the festive atmosphere along the quay. On Sunday, the farewell parade of ships provided a spectacular closing moment, with vessels sailing out together in a grand procession.
Practical Information
Sail Amsterdam is a quinquennial event (every five years), so the next edition will take place in 2030. The main activities happen along the IJ, easily reachable by foot from Amsterdam Central Station. The farewell parade of ships on Sunday typically takes place between 14:00 and 19:00. It is not a continuous stream of large vessels; sometimes there is a wait between the next big ship, but visitors can enjoy watching numerous small and medium boats sailing in the meantime. During the event, the city becomes very crowded, so arriving early helps secure a good viewing spot. Comfortable shoes, patience for long queues if visiting the ships, and a camera are highly recommended.

Conclusion
Sail Amsterdam is a celebration of history, culture, and the enduring connection between the Netherlands and the sea. Whether you are passionate about sailing or simply enjoy unique travel experiences, this event offers unforgettable sights and photo opportunities. The 2025 edition once again proved why it is one of the most iconic maritime festivals in the world.
